Can you Replay a Murder Mystery Game?

Does replaying a Foulplay murder mystery game take all the mystery out of the game?

Gamers know the thrill of replaying some of your favorite video games, board games, and card games. But what about murder mystery roleplaying games? It seems like it would be impossible to replay given that the murder will remain the same, but we are here to tell you that our games are actually very replayable!

While other murder mystery games can have a rigid structure and plot lines, our games are laid out a bit differently. Our free-form game style means our games contain many options for your characters and guests to pursue their goals and objectives differently--two people could play the same character and have wildly different results! We’ve seen it many times, and we do encourage people to replay their games and see just what new mischief, antics, and secrets come up in their next playthrough!

Here are 4 tips for replaying our games:

1. Switch up the characters! You’d be surprised how different a game can be with the same people when everyone is playing a new character! Since our characters and players have flexibility in pursuing goals and even how their personality traits are expressed, you can play the game with people who have played before and things will turn out differently! One person may play the confident captain with swagger, while the next person may have more subtle confidence but still get folks to trust them with their charming words! Creative interpretation can go a long way.

2. Include new friends! Depending on the game, you may only need a few new people to shake things up in your replay. Adding a couple of new, fresh people into the mix can really help give the game new life since they haven’t played before and aren’t familiar with the story as much as the seasoned people are. This fresh new perspective can really take the game in a new direction, and if previous players are assigned to different roles, it will make the whole game play like new!

3. Wait a month or two! Honestly, you’d be surprised what you may not remember from the first playthrough. Our games have a lot of extra plots and pieces in them–each character has different goals and means to accomplish those goals, meaning there is a lot of information to retain! People also tend to remember their own character’s backstory and motivations, and even that can get fuzzy after some time away! So waiting a couple of months and then hosting the game again even with a lot of the same players will help players rediscover the game in a new way! Even we are surprised to look back through and rediscover elements from our games that we didn’t quite remember!

4. Add some new elements! If you didn’t play with Foulplay Cards the first time around, try adding those to your game to add some extra risk to the game. Or you can purchase our Ability Card pack to up the stakes even more! These cards add an extra layer of strategy to the game as no one knows what cards are in play or what others may have to help or hinder their efforts!
