5 Tips For Putting Together a Murder Mystery Party Costume

Whether you are hosting or attending an upcoming murder mystery party, you’re in for a fun-filled evening with your family and friends! But before the party even gets started, you still have to decide what to wear! While costumes are not required, they are a lot of fun and can really help you get into character, so it's a great idea to put together something before the night of the party. Don't worry, we’re here to help you with 5 tips on how to put together the perfect murder mystery party costume.

1. Consider the theme and your character

One of the first things you should consider when putting together a murder mystery costume is the theme of the party. Whether it's Hollywood glam or a Halloween horror, your costume should be in line with the theme. If you're unsure, you can ask other friends who are attending the party what they are planning to wear and brainstorm ideas together. You can also reach out to the host to get an idea of what costumes others are planning or what they suggest you try.

2. Embrace Your Character

Most murder mystery parties will assign roles to all guests.  Your character’s job, role, personality, or age can give you some good ideas. If you’re playing the investigator role, you may want to wear something like a  suit, trenchcoat, or hat to present a look of authority. If you're playing the part of a femme fatale, you can wear something fun and glamorous, like a fundress or a faux fur robe.

3. Get Creative

This is your chance to be creative with your costume. You can be as elaborate or as simple as you want! You also don't have to spend a fortune to create a great costume! Visit a thrift store and find pieces that will work for your character–even a few accessories can make the outfit work! You can also try to DIY your own costume with items you currently have in your closet. Finally, ask your friends, family, or neighbors to borrow things! We have borrowed plenty of costume pieces from others,  and if you have a group that hosts murder mystery games or other costume parties often.

4. Think about Comfort

While you want to look fantastic, make sure your costume is comfortable to wear. You’ll be wearing it all night, and if it's uncomfortable, it’s hard to focus on the game and solve whodunnit! Test your outfit out before the party, and make sure you can walk, sit, move around, and dance in it without worrying about your clothes being restrictive, awkward, or uncomfortable. You’ll feel more confident in your character if you aren’t worrying about how your costume is feeling!.

5. Go online for inspiration!

All of our murder mystery games include a link to a Pinterest board to use as inspiration for costumes and party decor for each theme. Pinterest, asking on Facebook or Instagram, or googling the theme or time period can really help give some good ideas!

We hope these tips have helped guide you in choosing the perfect costume for your upcoming murder mystery party! Remember, the key is to choose a costume that you feel comfortable in, fits in with the party’s theme, and conveys your character's persona. Don't be afraid to get creative, and above all else, have fun with your costume!
